According to the
Georgia DOT, there are 1244 miles (1990
km) of Interstate highway within Georgia's boundaries.
The original
Interstates planned for Georgia were:
- I-16
- I-20
- I-24 (short
dip to and from Tennessee on a Chattanooga-Nashville route)
- I-59 (short
stretch from Alabama state line to I-24 in extreme N.W. Georgia)
- I-75
- I-85
- I-95
- I-175 (was to
be a spur to Albany, but GA DOT decided not to build it)
- I-185 (spur
from I-85 to Columbus - last to be completed in 1978.)
- I-285
(Atlanta's Perimeter Highway)
- I-475 (Macon
bypass)
- I-485 (Stone
Mountain Tollway - killed by Atlanta neighborhood groups in late '70's.)
Other
Interstates added or proposed:
- I-420
(Lakewood Freeway extension from I-75/85 to I-20 - scrapped by GA DOT.)
- I-485 (to
possibly be used for a proposed Outer Perimeter around Atlanta.)
- I-516 (W.F.
Lynnes Parkway - Was State Route 21 until redesignated circa 1992.)
- I-520 (Bobby
Jones Expressway, Augusta - was known as GA Hwy 232 until 1978.)
- I-575 (spur
from I-75 near Marietta - becomes GA Hwy 515 at Cherokee/Pickens County
line.)
- I-675 (spur
from I-75 in Henry County to I-285 in south DeKalb County.)
- I-985 (spur
from I-85 in Gwinnett County to Gainesville. This is limited-access portion
of GA Hwy 365.)
